Twitter creator Jack Dorsey promised to provide a Chinese version of its social networking service during a New York panel discussion on social media and digital activism. But because of technical and legal hurdles it will take some time in order the service could be available for the country.

The discussion took place at the Paley Center in New York. It was the session that was sponsored by the ReadWriteWeb Web 2.0 news site.

According to Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, there is a great influence of Twitter in China, despite the fact it is blocked for the whole country. Citizens of China are unable to use Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and probably the same can happen with Google. It seems like society forbids freedom of speech as well as any flow of information.

Ai said that one can take advantage of several ways around the Chinese government’s so-called Great Firewall, but they require a lot of work. As a matter of fact users have to sign up for the service but the language should be different.

Twitter can become a rich form of communication for the country. According to Dorsey, the company is working on to launch a version of its service that will be available with all languages, but still there is a big issue for Twitter, i.e. translation.
