Canon A470 becomes part of a space mission

Using some shop-shelf components that cost at about $150, two students have launched a digital camera into the space.
First of all, the kids acquired a weather balloon and filled it with helium. Then they filled the devices into a cooler of foam beer in order to insulate them from the minus 55 degree temperature persisting in the upper layer of atmosphere. Thereafter, they used chemical hand-warmers which could keep the camera and its batteries in functional condition.
A car park of a branch of US electric retailer was used to launch this mission.

Being very easy to hack, the camera used was Canon A470. CHDK, the freeware camera firmware update was installed which enabled the pre-programming of the camera so that it could click a picture in every 5 seconds.

All the required storage was provided by the 8GB SD card that was also installed.

D3000 and D300: new DSLRs from Nikon start selling today

Nikon has announced two new models in its series of DSLR cameras. They are the D300 and the D3000. it has been complete 50 years that the SLR F-Series was first launched by Nikon in 1959.

Both the cameras seem to made for entirely different DSLR requirements. While the D3000 has been designed for a layman and is pretty easy to use, the D300 on the other hand is manufactures for a professional photographer.

In the D3000, there is a ‘Guide Mode’ which enables starters to get great shots in all conditions. Further adding to the flavor are the 10.2 mega pixel sensor and the 11 point autofocus system. To use the basic retouchings on the image without needing a computer, you can also edit image right on the camera itself. The price of D3000 is 30,450.

The high end D300 has a 12.3 mega pixel sensor and 51 point autofocus. With this camera, you can also shoot video in High Definition at up to 7fps. Another prime feature of this camera is its dual storage capabilities, both in CF and SD memory cards. This DSLR is priced at Rs.1,09,950.

Both these will be available in stores from today onwards.
