On Thursday Nokia presented driving and walking directions for a number of countries on a range of their mobile phones.
One should mention that the new version of Ovi Maps can be found on 10 phones. The new version come with voice-guided driving and walking directions that have the following features: lane assistance, text-to-speech, road works information, live traffic as well as detailed content from partners such as Lonely Planet and Time Out. Maps are offered for 180 countries while navigation will be used for 72 among which one can note the U.S. and Canada. It is expected that all new Nokia smartphone that will have GPS will include the software.
The company offered the new service with a Nokia 5800 phone and a car kit to create a “navigation edition.” One should note that users will not have to pay fees for voice-guided navigation.
It is still unclear why Nokia is offering formerly-for-pay products of Lonely Planet, Michelin Guides, WCities and Time Out free of charge. Also it is still unknown whether free navigation is reason of smartphone prices’ rise.
Nokia’s mapping technology has advantages over Google’s. It is possible to store Ovi Maps in your phone’s memory and there is no use to download it every time you want to use it. Also it diminishes data traffic and allows navigation work in case there is no phone signal. Vector graphics are used in the maps that are more beneficial.
