Intel offers a line of Xeon server chips that are able to provide faster speed, compared to its previous server processors. The 15 new processors in the Xeon 5600 line involves low-power chips. They are available in the following variants: quad-core and six-core. According to the company the new chips are faster than the older Xeon 5500 series chips that were released about a year ago.
The new chips has the clock speed that ranges from 1.86GHz for the quad-core Xeon L5609 processor as a result it consumes only 40 watts of power, 3.46GHz is used for fastest Xeon X5677 six-core chip, it utilizes 130 watts. It should be said that all the processors chips are available with 12MB of cache.
Nowadays a lot of businesses use single-core chips in servers but now they are provided with a good opportunity to take advantage of new chips. One Xeon 5600 server can replace up to 15 single-core servers. With the help of a low-voltage, six-core Xeon 2.26GHz L5640 chip, it is possible to get comparable performance and also it uses only 60 watts.
The power as well as performance benefits can increase server shipments that, in fact, either have fallen or grown slowly in 2009.
