Today a new series of computers that are powered with IBM Corp.’s POWER7 microprocessors were unveiled.
The release of new systems that are targeted at expansion IBM’s hefty share of the $14 billion Unix server market will be held at an event in New York City. A big part of the hardware and software development work was conducted in Poughkeepsie.
One should say that it is considered to be the seventh generation of this line of chips found at the heart of a big part of IBM’s computer systems. Moreover, the new series of chips were used in servers for the first time.
One of these releases will cover the leading Unix line that was manufactured in Poughkeepsie. Other releases will cover the lower end that was created in other plants.
According to Mauri, Poughkeepsie is regarded as the leading plant in other words it is the center of the universe especially if it concerns high-end systems. If talk about the Unix line, the middle of the line is launched.
The growth of Unix is an IBM success story mainly due to a commitment made in 1998. Then in 2001 the POWER4 line was released that became the reason of IBM’s growth in this segment of the market.
