It has not been much time that hotmail passwords were leaked and gmail was being appreciated for its good security levels. But recently it has been reported by BBC that the scam has not affected Hotmail alone, and gmail has also been included. Others on the list are Yahoo Mail, AOL, Comcast and Earthlink accounts.
BBC has a list of more than 30000 leaked accounts.
The news was first revealed by NeoWin which also reported that it has cross-checked the lists. The lists have been obtained from their original post as PasteBin.
A spokesperson from Google however says that the number of affected accounts for gmail has been less than 500 and this phising scam has not breached any security of Gmail.
“We recently became aware of an industry-wide phishing scheme through which hackers gained user credentials for web-based mail accounts including Gmail accounts. As soon as we learned of the attack, we forced password resets on the affected accounts. We will continue to force password resets on additional accounts when we become aware of them”, said the spokesperson.
Ways to stronger passwords have been ensured by both Google as well as Microsoft and users are also advised to read the anti-phishing security.
