Nowadays social networking sites are very popular among users. Everyone wants to talk with their friends. Also everyone wants his/her friend to known about his status. But most employers do not approve this as their employees spend a lot of their working time visiting such sites as Facebook, LinkedIn, Orkut etc.
According to the survey, about 12.5 percent of the productivity of employees is lost every day as a big part of workers visit social networks. It was discovered that employees spend an hour of their working time on sites like Facebook. The survey was conduced in large cities and towns of India like Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai (Bombay), Pune, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Kanpur.
It was estimated that 19 percent of companies allow using social networking for business, 16 percent allow limited personal use. 40 percent of respondents said that their companies are not against when their employees use social networks during working hours.
But it was noted by ASSOCHAM secretary general DS Rawat, the increasing use of browsing sites can be perilous for productivity. Moreover, IT companies started to use software to control their employees.
About half of office employees visited Facebook during their office time. Four in every 10 workers create their accounts on Orkut or Facebook at office.
The survey also showed that about 84 per cent of the respondents are addicted to the Internet.
