Acer is considered to be one of the first main computer vendors who is going to offer systems that are based on Advanced Micro Devices’ latest Opteron server chips, i.e. the 6100 series.

According to Ben Williams, corporate vice president and general manager of AMD Asia-Pacific, together with such companies as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, as well as Cray, the company is preparing to announce servers which are based on the Opteron 6100 series

It should be mentioned that Acer has never been a major player in the market, also the company is thinking to make inroads into the server market which is targeted at medium-size as well as small businesses.

The Opteron 6100 series is available with 10 chips, 8 or 12 cores which provide clock speeds which vary from 1.7GHz to 2.4GHz. Also the prices of them are different, ranging from US$266 up to $1,386 each in 1,000-unit quantities. The chips are developed for servers that are equipped with two or four processors and, as a matter of fact, they provide better performance compared to AMD’s current offerings. The chips involve two silicon dies packages, each has four or six cores.
